Life can take unexpected but rewarding turns. In 1969, as a recently qualified junior doctor, I intended to become a surgeon and joined the Anatomy Department at Bristol as a demonstrator to refresh my anatomy. Barry Cross was the new Professor of Anatomy there. Trained in veterinary science, he had pioneered electrical recordings of hypothalamic oxytocin neurons and had appointed a group of young neurophysiologists to work with him. The department had just acquired a new electron microscope and Cross asked me to do two things: to revise the teaching of human gross anatomy to make it more functional; and to study the ultrastructure of neurosecretory neurons and neurosecretion. This started my lifetime of education and discovery.
